I’ve just come to check something on my blog and noticed that a description has appeared for one of my categories. Here it is:
Just at the top there “easy wordpress tips for the non-technical user”. Where did it come from? Well I put it in following some advice I received the other day. I didn’t know whether it would be seen or not (hence I didn’t use a capital E at the start of the line!), but I knew it would improve the SEO for my site.
You see the page that this comes from “WordPress Tips” is created by listing posts that are all in the same category. Thus when I write a post about WordPress, as I’m doing now, all I have to do is click the category for WordPress Tips and it will appear on this page.
When you go to set up your categories in WordPress you are told that you need not worry about the description necessarily – “The description is not prominent by default; however, some themes may show it.”, which is true. Some themes may not show it. But it will still appear with the page and even if users can’t see it, the search engines CAN.
So hop on over to your WordPress blog now and get more value from your content in two ways – make use of categories and give those categories a description!
(And I’m just off to correct my punctuation now I know that everyone might see!).
