Invest in yourself

Taking some time out to invest in some training for you can benefit your business in many ways. Not only are you increasing your skills, you have the opportunity to network, meet other local business owners, maybe even eye up a venue for your own seminars or meetings.

I find it difficult sometimes to stand back from my business and plan where it’s going – and where I am going. It always seems more important just to get that current job out of the way. But it is an important thing to do and can be such a good investment of time. Otherwise your “current” job may be your last.

If you are always “fire-fighting”, always working on whatever problem jumps up and shouts the loudest, then you never really give your business chance to expand.

This is all about working smarter, not harder. Who would like to be in the position of finishing on time every day, being able to take time out here and there for family activities without feeling guilty? Well every one I would hope (unless you are a complete workaholic. Then you have other issues to address).

So invest some time now, looking ahead, planning where you are going and where your business is going. I have just booked two courses with Business Link which have a triple bonus: they will (hopefully) increase my knowledge in their subject area; they will enable me to meet other local business people and best of all they are free! MENTA provide similar excellent training courses all free of charge.

Having made my bookings I have entered them on the brilliant Marketing Calendar available from Gemma Thompson (marketing, because I will be networking at these courses too) and now I’m off to muck the stables out. (Well sometimes you have to do a bit of work even in your free time!).
