The web is indeed a fascinating place. There is literally the whole of humanity out here now doing whatever they do, good, bad and inbetween. Thankfully most of it is good and there are so many excellent resources and information available. But how do you make use of it without getting completely overwhelmed and ending up learning nothing?
I use Google Reader. There are all sorts of Readers available, mostly free, but what is a reader? Well, when you go to a website, look for mention of an “RSS feed” or most commonly an orange button. This means the website has the ability to connect to a Reader.
Once you have told your Reader that you are interested in this website by clicking on the orange button, every time that site is updated you will get a message in your Reader and you will be able to read the title and the first few lines of the new article available on that website. But of course its not just one website – you can do this for all the websites you are interested in keeping up with regularly. Then, instead of having to visit each website to see what’s new, you can just go to your reader and flick through all the new articles to see which ones you might want to read in detail. Hey presto, twenty websites scanned in as many seconds. You are all caught up with the latest news and can get on with your day – which is what I am going to do now!
(And YES, there is an RSS feed available from this site! Scroll right down to the footer and look for the orange button.)
