This is another in a series of WordPress tutorials I prepared last year but most of the content is still very relevant to the latest versions of WordPress. Adding new media to WordPress posts and pages just keeps on improving with much better interfaces now. But you still need to know which fields to complete for that all important SEO to get your content found.

New comment on your blog? Yeah! But it’s a Pingback… what’s that??

Whenever I hear the phrase ‘pingback’ I think of people with belts round their middle attached to long lengths of elastic trying to reach something that is out of reach and getting ‘pinged’ back to where they started – usually on some mad game on television. (I did put in ‘man on elastic’ in a Google search in an attempt to get an image for this post – don’t – you get lots of people with very stretchy chest and arm skin which may be impressive but is pretty yucky!).

Anyway, onto the post. So, what is a pingback?

Well, imagine the following scenario:

Alice writes a post about bloodhound dogs and publishes it on her blog.

Susan runs a dog boarding kennels. She sees Susan’s post and links to it from her blog.

Both Alice and Susan have Pingbacks enabled on their blogs.

When Susan publishes her blog post, WordPress picks up that she has referenced another WordPress blog and notifies Alice via a PINGBACK.

Ah! All is revealed.

So basically all a pingback is, is a notification that someone else has referenced one of your blog posts.

So pingbacks are good. They mean someone has not only read your blog but liked it enough to refer to it in one of their posts.

Do you publish Pingbacks?

No. They are useful to you because you know someone has linked to your blog, but don’t publish them. They don’t make much sense (they will appear like any other comment on the end of your post) and are of no value to the search engines.

You may not want to publish them but it’s still handy to know about them.

Turning Pingbacks on

In your dashboard go to Settings / Discussion settings and make sure the following two options are ticked:

Attempt to notify any blogs linked to from the article
Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks)

Viola – you will now hear when people link to your blog from an article in their blog.

When you receive a pingback, give yourself a little pat on the back and carry on the good work of writing more stuff people will link to!
